Bold, Complementary Colors
Spice up a summer wedding with not one, but two warm accent colors! “We went with the more up-to-date colors … that are hot this year, which are the orange tangerine and the teal,” Randi Garrett, owner and designer of Naakiti Floral Design, said. With this bold color combination, Retro Funk achieved a vintage vibe with a modern, trendy twist.
Funky Furniture
While a retro color scheme sets the tone, solidify Retro Funk with vintage furniture. Consider an old desk for a sweetheart table with plenty of character. Paint its base, and don’t worry about imperfections. It’s all adding to the vintage look with one-of-a-kind décor.
Then complement the table with characteristic Chiavari chairs in bright colors or neutral tones. “We started with customizing the Chiavari chairs in different colors,” Garret said. So, brides, any design is possible! To save the big splash of color for the reception, stay neutral for the ceremony through wooden Chiavari chairs with white cushions.
Less is More
Make a big statement with minimalistic ceremony design. Exchange an elaborate archway for vintage double doors and a sturdy, fabric backdrop. Serve chilled Jarritos drinks to hydrate guests and give a memento before the ceremony starts. In all you do: Add character, not clutter. Think simple. But be creative.
Texture, Texture, Texture
Polish a Retro Funk theme with textured accents. “We kind of gave it a little bit of that retro feel there,” Garrett said. Think wooden tabletops, framed “bride” and “groom” signs with peeling paint, rounded glass jugs, burlap-wrapped mason jars, ceramic bird sculptures, polished plates, cloth napkins, ridged vases, and pillar candles. If it has a unique touch and feel, it has texture! And that brings the funk.
Fresh Flowers
Lastly, add bright, fresh flowers to tabletops. Choose flowers that look like they came from the backyard garden—simple buds, big bunches, nothing too ornate or exotic. These common flowers give a touch of home. Then to balance the retro floral arrangements, place flowers in modern, sleek vases with short, wide bases. If you’d like, also include a “Fresh Cut Flowers” sign (entry table accent, anyone?) to garner that relaxed feeling of shopping sidewalk displays on your favorite chic street.
